History....A Condensed Version 05/29/2009
I felt like ending this work week on a humorous note.... ![]() by Dacia Nichol “We serve a cause that is right, and a cause that gives hope to the oppressed in every corner of this earth. We’re the kind of country that fights for freedom, and the men and women in that fight are some of the bravest citizens this nation has ever produced. The only way for us to lose is to quit.” - Dick Cheney The April 28th, 2009 edition of the New York Sun had an editorial column titled, “Sound Familiar?”, in which the future of the GOP was debated in terms of “what if” Cheney had run in the 2008 presidential election. Since Cheney has been popping his head up as of late, this author has decided to put her two cents in on the matter: Why is Dick Cheney such a controversial figure? Was it his role in the Bush administration (read: quintessential Darth Vader)? His Chief of Staff’s penchant for revenge? Wait...it has to be his striking similarity to Satan himself, right? Perhaps all of these, perhaps none. On some sides of the conservative fence, he represents strength and the gall to do the dirty work when it needs to be done. On other sides, he’s everything that’s wrong in this country today - the complete lack of held sanctity for human life, the dissipation of civil liberties, and American values thrown out the window in the ultimate display of shame. What do you think? That leads to the next issue at hand... The topic of fiercest debate in our “Overseas Contingency Operation” is over the use of “enhanced interrogation” techniques, and this debate undoubtedly had its deepest impact on the GOP. What led the U.S. to hold such a high moral standard to begin with? A feeling that ultimately has lead us to feel sympathy for those who would not hesitate to kill any one of us while taking their own lives in the same instance? Is there suddenly no jungle to which certain rules must not apply as a matter of necessity in this world? A shining city on a hill can only shine as long as it can defend itself against its enemies…or can it? Teddy and Reagan seemed to think so, but Powell sees a different direction for their party. Where do you stand? Not to excuse the modern American practice of waterboarding (maybe to defend it instead), but the idea that waterboarding as was practiced at Club Gitmo bears any resemblance to that practiced by the Japanese is laughable. The distinction is simple - one you can survive 266 times and walk away without harm, the other you can’t. Ms. Coulter describes it best in her article, Watching MSNBC is Torture: "The Japanese version of "waterboarding" was to fill the prisoner's stomach with water until his stomach was distended -- and then pound on his stomach, causing the prisoner to vomit. Or they would jam a stick into the prisoner's nose so he could breathe only through his mouth and then pour water in his mouth so he would choke to death…Or they would "waterboard" the prisoner with saltwater, which would kill him.” Do you think there’s a difference? These questions seem to be causing a great stir in our party. Perhaps the words of the Editor of the New York Sun can help us remember our direction: “...What the country, and the Republicans, sorely need at this point is not nostalgia for Mr. Cheney but the emergence of a new generation of leaders that will make the case for a strong national defense and a modest government that respects property rights and the rule of law.” We concur! Supreme Court Injustice 05/27/2009
![]() by Thomas Craig The announcement of Judge Sonia Sotomayor as a nominee for the United States Supreme Court brings to light some truly controversial topics. First, what bothers me the most about this entire debacle is the constant call for President Obama to nominate a Hispanic or a female. Call me old fashioned, but I would prefer he nominated THE BEST PERSON FOR THE JOB! If Judge Sotomayor were truly believed to be the best person for the job then I would respect the President's decision. The mere fact that he nominated someone who is both Hispanic AND a female, shows that this is more than coincidence. Judge Sotomayor did have a remarkable life and I applaud her on fulfilling the American dream and rising so high. I would think a woman of her nature would pride herself on the fact that she has overcome so many obstacles. I wonder how she feels now that she is being nominated because she was born a certain ethnicity and gender. Imagine something so terrible as a white male being nominated by the President. He would never dare! This, of course, all leads to the constant debate over affirmative action. Affirmative action began as a praise-worthy cause but it has become unnecessary in modern times. It has gone so far over the edge that it now promotes exactly what it was created to prevent. Now, white males have to overcome the obstacle that no matter how hard they work and how much they succeed, they can be denied opportunities based on the sole fact of their ethnicity and gender. This is technically illegal, yet is accepted throughout America. Judge Sotomayor, herself, ruled against the firefighters in New Haven, CT who all passed their exams but were not promoted because none of the minority applicants had passed. People even went so far as to call the testing "racist". To view written tests as racist is to truly insult the intelligence and competency of minorities. President Obama even questioned the benefits of affirmative action in today's America. I would hope so. It is difficult to argue that the same racial tensions that existed decades ago still exist today when an African-American holds our highest office. In fact, I would go so far as to say that any existing racial tensions would improve by eliminating affirmative action. Of course there are going to be bitter white people when they know that they can do better than a minority co-worker or another student, yet that person will be rewarded for no reason other than the color of their skin. It's time to grow up America. Level the playing field and for once, let's try to actually live up to the idea that "all men are created equal." The Threat of Iran 05/26/2009
by Liz Berney The "Cartel" Which Is Our Education System 05/23/2009
![]() by Dacia Nichol At yesterday’s New York Young Republican Club’s monthly meeting, Bob Bowdon was the guest speaker of the night - a man who has enjoyed success as a reporter and anchor on various media networks. His most notable work has been as an anchor/reporter for Bloomberg Television and recently as a reporter named Brian Scott on The Onion News Network. Plug: He’s a highly effective and hilarious speaker even as he tells us things we should cry about.... Bob has done some great investigative journalism work for his new feature documentary film, The Cartel, about the mishandling of our education system (New Jersey in particular), which will be premiering at The Hoboken International Film Festival in New Jersey on May 30th at 2 pm. [Please note that his premier is not actually in Hoboken, it’s in Teaneck, and Bob has stressed that Teaneck is much easier to get to than Staten Island...which actually holds no relevance to the film festival but would be a funny mention had you been at this awesome meeting...just saying...] It is highly recommended that you visit the film’s website, or even better, visit, purchase tickets, and then take a haul out to Teaneck, NJ next weekend to see The Cartel for yourself. Some very interesting points of discussion in Bob’s film are summarized as follows...with some sensationalist modifications of course...perhaps to peak your interest? Yes, the evil plot unfolds: - America ranks last in educational effectiveness (or for a positive spin, #1 in Suck-y-ness) among the world’s industrialized countries, and first in amount of money spent per student in the world.* [Read: modified GIGO effect - gold in, garbage out] - 15 year olds in the United States have worse math skills than kids in Azerbaijan.* Pop quiz: Do you know where Azerbaijan is? [No, sorry - Borat was from Kazakhstan...] - Some Jersey superintendents in poor districts make some serious bling. I’m talking presidential salaries folks.* - There should be a show called “I Dream of Janitors”...or their salaries that is. For cleaning duties not to exceed 4 feet above the ground, you just might bring home a whopping $100k a year as a janitor in a Jersey public school.* Now if only they required a degree in waste management for it, they could be Stafford slaves like the rest of us over-achievers. And there’s more where that came from! Be there for the premiere on May 30th at 2 pm in Teaneck, NJ. If you don’t, the forces of good in the world will unite and....in spirit of the United Nations...send you a letter**...telling you just how angry they are about it. Maybe. * Based on information provided at http://www.thecartelmovie.com and by Bob Bowdon at this meeting. ** Link has explicit language used. American Responsibility 05/21/2009

Israel & Palestine: A Two State Solution 05/18/2009
![]() by Thomas Craig President Obama is meeting with Israeli Prime Minister Netanyahu to speak about solutions for the Mideast conflict. Obama, as expected, is set to push his two-state solution for the problem which is currently not too popular within Israel. This is understandable since any Nation which is forced to endure constant threats of terrorism would be logically opposed to "rewarding" their enemies. While you cannot say that the Israeli People are wrong for their resistance to this idea, I do believe it would be in the entire world's best interest for this to happen. First, a Palestinian State would appease SOME, certainly not all, Palestinians. They don't want to be governed by a foreign People anymore than we do. A Palestinian State would allow them to truly govern themselves without interference from Israel. They would invest in their Country and (ideally) prosper. This would not only benefit the Palestinians but Israel as well. Right now, the Palestinian People do not have much, if anything. A People with nothing to lose will go to extreme means just to gain something. If these same People create a true Country with an economy, infrastructure, social programs, etc., they will be less willing to lose it all. Hamas shoots rockets into Israel and Israel responds with raids. Does anything really get accomplished? If the State of Palestine exists, there will be more opposition within to sanction the terror and risk losing the administrations power. Israel would be able to attack real targets as opposed to renegade terrorists hiding in schools and Mosques. It levels the playing field and sends a stronger message to the Palestinian People as a whole. A Palestinian State would also lessen the martyr card so loved by the Leaders in other Muslim Nations. All the Arab Countries surrounding Israel are governed by Leaders who use the Palestinians as a scapegoat for their troubles. These Leaders are corrupt and tyrannical and by distracting the masses, they maintain their power. This is why the Arab Nations offer so little help, if any at all, to the Palestinians. They cry out over their unity with the Palestinians but they do nothing. If a state of Palestine were to exist, people might stop blaming Israel for their own problems and start questioning their own Leaders. These are some reasons why I support the two State solution, but my main reason is this. This endless cycle of violence will not stop unless something radical happens. Israel will not give up and will not lay down and let the world handle this problem. The world has shown too many times just exactly how they prefer to "deal" with Jews. Israel has made many concessions and they will be forced to make more in the future. A Palestinian State is something that will have to happen sooner or later. The Palestinians, however, will have to make concessions as well. They can have their own Nation, but they have to recognize that Israel is here to stay. I have every confidence that at some point, they will realize this and the result will be progress. The question is whether it happens now or later. * Notable Quotables * 05/16/2009
We must remember that the principal instrument of government is coercion and that our government officials are no more moral, omnipotent, nor omniscient than are any of the rest of us. Once we understand the basic principles which must be observed if freedom is to be safeguarded against government, we may become more hesitant in turning our personal problems and responsibilities over to that agency of coercion, with its insatiable appetite for power.
