We're hearing a lot today about big splashy memorial services for such “luminaries” as Wacko Jacko... I want a nationwide memorial service for Darrell "Shifty" Powers.

Shifty volunteered for the airborne in WWII and served with Easy Company of the 506th Parachute Infantry Regiment, part of the 101st Airborne Infantry. If you've seen Band of Brothers on HBO or the History Channel, you know Shifty.

His character appears in all 10 episodes, and Shifty himself is interviewed in several of them. I met Shifty in the Philadelphia airport several years ago. I didn't know who he was at the time. I just saw an elderly gentleman having trouble reading his ticket. I offered to help, assured him that he was at the right gate, and noticed the "Screaming Eagle", the symbol of the 101st Airborne, on his hat.Making conversation, I asked him if he'd been in the 101st Airborne or if his son was serving. He said quietly that he had been in the 101st. I thanked him for his service, then asked him when he served, and how many jumps he made.

Quietly and humbly, he said "Well, I guess I signed up in 1941 or so, and was in until sometime in 1945 . . .. " at which point my heart skipped.  At that point, again, very humbly, he said "I made the 5 training jumps at Toccoa, and then jumped into Normandy . . . . do you know where Normandy is?" At this point my heart stopped.I told him yes, I know exactly where Normandy was, and I know what D-Day was. At that point he said "I also made a second jump into Holland, into Arnhem." I was standing with a genuine war hero . . . . and then I realized that it was June, just after the anniversary of D-Day.

I asked Shifty if he was on his way back from France, and he said "Yes. And it's real sad because these days so few of the guys are left, and those that are, lots of them can't make the trip." My heart was in my throat and I didn't know what to say. 

I helped Shifty get onto the plane and then realized he was back in Coach, while I was in First Class. I sent the flight attendant back to get him and said that I wanted to switch seats. When Shifty came forward, I got up out of the seat and told him I wanted him to have it, that I'd take his in coach.  He said "No, son, you enjoy that seat.  Just knowing that there are still some who remember what we did and still care is enough to make an old man very happy." His eyes were filling up as he said it. And mine are brimming up now as I write this.

Shifty died on June 17 after fighting cancer.

There was no parade.No big event in Staples Center. 
No wall to wall back to back 24/7 news coverage on MSNBC, CNN, NBC, CBS or ABC. 
No weeping fans on television.

And that's not right.

Let's give Shifty his own Memorial Service, online, in our own quiet way.  Please forward this post to everyone you know. Especially to the veterans.

Well, what is is Obama going to do but to ask for Americans to wait the bad economic times.  I guess since almost all of the “stimulus” won’t take effect until the end of this year or next year we’ll have to do as he says.  Of course, the “stimulus” was supposed to create or save 2-3 million jobs.  Unemployment has increased since those days but supporters would point to some phantom facts and say: “Gee it would have been worse without the stimulus.”  Sure.

According to the Associated Press:

It’s unclear whether this will work, because polls show mounting anxiety about Obama’s policies. These include his $787 billion stimulus package, which has not had a huge impact so far, and, more broadly, the vast spending that has pushed the federal deficit to the unprecedented level of more than $1 trillion this year.

Despite blowing up the debt, Obama remained upbeat:

“And the challenge for this administration is to make sure that even as we are stabilizing the financial system, we understand that the most important thing in the economy is: Are people able to find good jobs that pay good wages?”

I find this statement to be a complete joke since he is trying to kill the economy with Cap and Trade.  Healthcare “reform” looks to saddle the country will so much debt we could all go down the tubes as without the “revenue” from Cap and Trade there will be no money to fund Obamakare.

To be fair to President Obama, he did not cause the economy to be the way that it is and he did take office at a difficult time for anybody, however his willingness to push economic killers is not doing any favors for workers or businesses who have got to be wondering how much of their money they will be forced to donate to the government.  Already in California the sales tax was jacked up and the fee to license a car for a year was doubled not to mention all of the new taxes that are being implemented and Obama’s push to tax the “wealthy” an extra 5.4%.

What the economy needs are tax cuts, reducing spending, and no more foolish “stimulus” spending that only places a greater burden on future generations of Americans.  Small business owners, who employ the majority of Americans, need to know it is safe to hire people and invest in the future.

Obama, were he smart, would also expand oil drilling so as to not only secure a future energy supply for Americans, increase tax revenues, but also curtail the flow of money to the Middle East and countries like Venezuela.  California alone would stand to see billions of dollars in revenue were offshore oil drilling to be allowed.  Nuclear plants should also be built (which would actually do some stimulating in more ways than one).

Instead, we will see silly pep talks about patience and waiting for sunnier days while the Democrats press forward on healthcare “reform” and Cap and Trade as well as other silly ideas that will be poorly implimented because they do not have the “patience” to slow the process down and write sensible bills.

Once more we wade into the stupidity that is the Democratic Cap and Trade bill, now put away until sometime in the Fall for lack of support.  Cap and Trade would tax everything based upon how “dirty” the energy it took to create it was (read CO2).  This bill, if it became law, would lay waste to the U.S. economy, cause Americans up to $1,400.00 per year in extra spending, kill jobs, and put the U.S. at a disadvantage when compared to our trade competitors.

India and China will have none of this foolish Liberal agenda:

India on Sunday night rebuffed an appeal by Hillary Clinton, US secretary of state, to embrace a low-carbon future in which the two countries would work together to devise new ways of consuming and producing energy.

Mrs Clinton, on a five-day visit to the country, said that low-carbon emissions would not jeopardise India’s high economic growth rates and its goal of lifting millions of people out of poverty. She offered a technological partnership to secure the fast growing nation’s energy supplies and help boost the livelihoods of its farmers.

China had the same reaction:

We are told that although China, India and others show no signs of joining in this dismal process, we will eventually induce their participation by “setting an example.” Watching the impending indigence of the Midwest, and the flow of jobs from our shores to theirs, our friends in Asia and the Third World are far more likely to choose any other path but ours.

What is even more absurd is that Obama’s own EPA admits Cap and Trade will do nothing:

The Senate Environment and Public Works Committee began their hearings on the 1,500 page Waxman-Markey cap-and-trade legislation Tuesday, and ranking member Senator James Inhofe (R-OK) won a startling admission from Environmental Protection Agency administrator Lisa Jackson. Inhofe produced an EPA chart generated last year during the Senate’s debate of the Lieberman-Warner cap-and-trade legislation. The chart showed that the carbon reductions under that bill would not materially effect global carbon concentrations in the atmosphere. Inhofe then asked Jackson if she agreed with the chart’s conclusions. Jackson replied: “I believe that essential parts of the chart are that the U.S. action alone will not impact CO2 levels.”

Guess what?  The other countries won’t participate because it will destroy their economies!  Yet another foolish idea from the Democrats that will hurt our economy.

It is also troubling that, with so many issues in the world that Secretary of State Clinton would spend so much time discussing a non-starting idea with the Indians.  Shouldn’t her limited time be better spent working on issues relating to terrorism, Pakistan, Afghanistan, nuclear proliferation, and trade instead of lecturing them on ideas they will never buy into?

With the economy still in trouble, Obama’s support shrinking, and Cap and Trade shelved until the Fall surely there are more important things to be done instead of trying to kill our economy.
 
 

Medical Opinions

The American Medical Association has weighed in on the new health care package.

The Allergists voted to scratch it, but the Dermatologists advised not to make any rash moves.

The Gastroenterologists had sort of a gut feeling about it, but the Neurologists thought the Administration had a lot of nerve.

The Obstetricians felt they were all laboring under a misconception. Ophthalmologists considered the idea shortsighted. Pathologists yelled, "Over my dead body!" while the Pediatricians said, 'Oh, Grow up!' 

The Psychiatrists thought the whole idea was madness, while the Radiologists could see right through it.

Surgeons decided to wash their hands of the whole thing.

The Internists thought it was a bitter pill to swallow, and the Plastic Surgeons said, "This puts a whole new face on the matter." 

The Podiatrists thought it was a step forward, but the Urologists were pissed off at the whole idea.

The Anesthesiologists thought the whole idea was a gas, and the Cardiologists didn't have the heart to say no.

In the end, the Proctologists won out, leaving the entire decision up to the ass holes in Washington.

President Obama seems to be building on his record of bad judgement.  It all started with his comments regarding the bonuses contractually awarded to AIG executives.  His words helped to cause or inflame a sea of anger against those employees with some getting death threats.  Obama ended up backing away from his earlier statements.  Then we had another example after the presidential elections in Iran where Obama remained silent for the entire weekend before, after people in his administration began speaking out, he finally condemned the shooting and arrests of protesters.  Now we have the latest example: the arrest of a man for breaking into his own house (which was not known until after the police showed up).

Nobody is perfect and thus everyone is entitled to make mistakes or to have lapses in judgement.  However when you are President of the United States you shouldn’t open your mouth without carefully considering the effect those words can have (and to be smart enough to know this doubly applies to matters of “race”).

Originally Obama condemned the arrest of the black man by police:

Obama said Wednesday that Cambridge police “acted stupidly” during the disorderly conduct arrest of his friend, Henry Louis Gates Jr., in his own home near Harvard University.

 Obama backed off of his statements after a racial firestorm errupted:

President Barack Obama backed down on Friday from a statement that police had “acted stupidly” in arresting a black scholar in a racially charged case that was rapidly becoming a distraction for Obama.

“Because this has been ratcheting up and I obviously helped to contribute ratcheting it up, I wanted to make clear in my choice of words I think I unfortunately gave an impression that I was maligning the Cambridge Police Department or Sgt. Crowley specifically,” Obama said. “And I could have calibrated those words differently.”

Well… duh!  What I found most shocking was that Obama seemed to think this reaction would be a surprise:

“The fact that it has garnered so much attention, I think, is a testimony to the fact that these are issues that are still very sensitive here in America,’’said Obama.

What this little incident shows is that President Obama does not seem to behave as if he is representing all Americans and that he should use caution when wading into a murky situation.  I am shocked that he would even say anything about this considering when a U.S. soldier was murdered in Arkansas by a Muslim claiming jihad he was virtually silent on the matter.  But jihad is not something Liberals like to address for what it is.  The issue for me has nothing to do with race but rather the stupid statements from someone who should know better and the 180 degree spin he put on when he was condemned by the police, the police unions, many blacks, and ordinary Americans.

So either he meant what he originally said but wouldn’t stand up for his remarks, he was playing the race card to score political points, or he just didn’t think before speaking.  Any of those possibilities don’t say much positive about him.

The latest and greatest social program failure should suggest only one thing: government involvement in anything is a bad omen. Massachusetts is having a problem with its budget, and guess what? Its newly-minted state health care program seems to be the thing causing the biggest headaches.

Now this fact seems to be drawing mixed emotions from both sides of the aisle. Why? Because Republican governor and strong presidential contender for 2012 Mitt Romney was the big force in charge of said health care mandate.

Disclaimer: This author is an outright screaming advocate for Romney's presidency in 2012 and shall not be shy in her bias as such when addressing relevant subject matter.

Everyone wanted to solve the Massachusetts health care puzzle in 2006: Liberals wanted the taxpayers to pay for a universal solution, and Republicans wanted a free market solution. So who won? They both did - and therein lies the problem (for more on this see "Overloading the well-oiled machine").

To begin with, we'll address the question that's been floating around the last few days given the spotlight focus of health care at the moment: Will Mitt Romney's future presidential bid be hampered by his support and impending failure of the Massachusetts State Health Insurance ("MassHealth") passed under his governance?

No. Let me tell you why.

Mitt Romney's plan was in fact the best we could hope for as far as success in universal health care - it had the least financial burden on the taxpayer possible, with options and automations to make health care access nearly streamlined, yet it still cost too much and was too bogged down with bureaucracy to successfully function. Romney's plan aimed to address a few things: 1) The $ millions it cost to pay for emergency care used by uninsured individuals; 2) the high cost of care for individuals with health insurance due to a small pool of individuals paying into the system (READ: young and healthy residents not paying for insurance because they don't need it); and 3) lowering premiums by eliminating unnecessary benefits such as maternity care for individuals under 25.

Romney's plan worked with private insurance to lower the purchasing cost so that it could be accessible by all. Yes, that's right - AFFORDABLE health insurance with a Republican in charge. Then the government mandate requiring health insurance coverage was set up to add more funds to the health care pools (paying healthy individuals) thereby lowering all insurance premiums. Finally, there was the auto-enrollment feature that ensured your coverage even if residents got lazy about it, brunting the cost the hospitals would usually face from uninsured individuals.

So what happened?

Let us remember this as a lesson in what has been an issue for the country as a whole: The captain is conservative, but his liberal crewmen are constantly trying to undermine him. Ultimately, the responsibility for the safety and security of the ship will fall upon the captain, effectively freeing those out of the limelight to tweak away, eroding the efficiency and positive results of the programs set forth by the leader. In sum, Mitt was a Republican, but the legislative body he was working with was overwhelmingly liberal. The discord was apparent when Romney vetoed 8 sections of the MassHealth bill, all of which were promptly overturned - and when he made further proposals for effectiveness and quality, they were rejected and excluded from the bill by the legislature. IN FACT, Massachusetts is currently proposing to eliminate or significantly cut funding for at least one of these same vetoed initiatives. The reason being that, guess what? They can't afford it!

You see, Romney, being the successful business man that he is, understood that money doesn't grow on trees (although Mass has some gorgeous greenery...). His original plan had more fiscal restraint that arguably could have prevented some of these MassHealth funding issues. Things like dental, vision, public health programs, and additional money for those already covered by federal programs are nice, but financially just not feasible in the long term - or to use the recent news buzz word on the topic - "unsustainable". Romney knew this, objected to such funding measures, and was ignored anyhow. Hello budget crisis! Don't you just love bipartisanship?

Despite the good will behind MassHealth, there's still the overall lesson to be had about government and private industry: not good bedfellows. More research into MassHealth reveals the additional bureaucracy that stifled progress - the employer mandates for instance. The whole attitude was "do it or else". Obviously, something like universal coverage is going to need creativity to bankroll, but after drafting page after page of legislation to make it so, one must beg the question - is this really necessary?

So to conclude the topic over whether the MassHealth nose dive will hurt Romney, you can find comfort in knowing that it won't - as long as he keeps control of the spin that's going to be thrown at him about it that is. Like him or not, Romney proved something about himself with MassHealth - he's a true representative of his people. The people of Massachusetts told him what they wanted, universal coverage, and he tried everything he could to make it work despite his knowledge that the chances of its success were slim. No agenda pushing - he listened and responded. As far as achieving it's goal, MassHealth was in fact a success - the percentage of uninsured individuals in Massachusetts looms around a mere 2%. Left at the helm to watch over MassHealth's progress in relation to the rest of the budget, who knows? Maybe Romney would have pulled out more solutions to resolve the problems. After all he did manage to pull the miracle of balancing the state budget 4 years in a row with a liberal congress waiting for their opportunity to pounce.

He listened, he acted, it still didn't work, so let's move on and accept the fact that universal coverage just doesn't work in reality. Let's take the successes of lowering premiums and making coverage accessible and affordable and drop the failing parts - taxpayers funding socialization of our medicine.

That’s a funny way to say “we’re still in a deep recession.” When the third round of layoffs went through my little company three weeks ago, the first thing I thought was, “Wow. That Obama, he’s really rescued the economy.”

Yeah, you rescued the economy, Obugger. That's why unclaimed dead bodies are stacking up in the Los Angeles County morgue because their relatives have so much money they’re just letting the government have the honor of footing the bill for the burials. That's why you need a federal toilet paper tax so you can pay for all those extra flushes you need to send just about every good business model down the crapper. That's why some New Yorkers could be paying as much as 60 percent of their income in taxes if you manage to Rahm your Obamacare plan through despite more than 50 percent of the population thinking you're the one we should send on the first manned mission to Mars, the sooner the better.

Yeah, you rescued the economy. That's why Detroit, one of the former symbols of economic ingenuity and craftsmanship and hard work, will now forever be a ghost town, when the only city deserving of such a fate is Washington, D.C. That’s why Michigan's unemployment is surging toward 20 percent, and at least 15 of your "57 states" just went over 10 percent unemployment last month. You know the economy is rescued when one in 5 state employees is collecting unemployment.

Yeah, you rescued the economy. That's why Cauli-for-nia's been sending out IOUs not only to citizens waiting for tax refunds but also to creditors waiting for the gubernator to pay the bills. That's why 27,000 criminals could be released on the streets of California because the economy is sooooo good they need extra workers to pick phantom crops that grew in our imaginations because you won't let farmers water their fields.

Yeah, you rescued the economy. That's why Joey "Slapstick" Biden's walking around talking about spending money we don't have in order to keep from going bankrupt. That's why you've been quietly telling people, who are just trying to stop you from making terrible policy mistakes because you haven't even read what your health care bills says, that they're going "to destroy [your] presidency." That's why it's not about you; it's about YOU.

Yeah, you rescued the economy. That’s why we have a cap and tax bill that would cost the average family $4,000 a year that won’t pass the Senate because members of your own caucus would rather wrap a rope around their necks and tie it to a parking meter and get in their cars and hit the gas pedal. That’s why no one’s buying cars from the shell of a company called Government Motors that you now effectively own because they must be waiting for the little one-seater 20 hp version of the Hummer to come out. That’s why Missouri Rep. Russ Carnahan got booed off the stage for telling baldfaced lies that your health care plan would actually MAKE the federal government money.

So while you’re up there pandering your $1.3 trillion or $3 trillion or $300 gazillion government takeover of my wallet and that of every other hard working American, while you’re up there worrying about your presidency being destroyed because you keep talking about getting so much done while little if anything (except government largess) gets done, while you’re up there wondering about your dwindling support among “conservative” members of your own party, among independents, among regular American people who don't have your elitist attitude but who are definitely waking up (finally), you may want to think about this:

This economy isn’t “rescued,” not by a long shot. And if it does get better while you’re still in office, remember that while your Waterloo moment may be coming you’ve still done enough damage in 6 months to leave us with plenty of reasons for years to come to invade China so we don't have to pay them back.

Now, if you’ll excuse me. I’m not very interested in hearing you speak tonight. I have a movie to watch to prepare for the future. It’s called Dumb and Dumber.

It seems that the question of President Obama's citizenship will not go away.  I completely understand the anger and disappointment that Americans are feeling, however, perhaps it is time to put this one to rest.  The 14th Amendment clearly states that "all persons born or naturalized in the United States, and subject to the jurisdiction thereof, are citizens of the United States."  Barack Obama was born in Hawaii on August 4th, 1961.  Hawaii became a state in 1959.  (Click on the above image to see his birth certificate.)  The question now remains if the government has altered or forged this document.  Is it possible?  Perhaps.  Is it likely?  No, it is not. 

We all have to accept that President Obama is fully eligible to hold the office.  We can snicker about it if we want but until proof is shown that there was a government conspiracy regarding this, we have to accept it.  Challenging the President's eligibility is not only a waste of time, but it demeans and deprives attention from the true arguments that the People have.  The Obama Administration, I believe, LOVES this type of drama.  They see the benefits of ridiculous distractions such as this debate.  While we are all paying attention to the debate about his citizenship, the administration is pushing bills through congress without any time for the bills to be read and understood.  We need to keep our eye on the ball.  Do not let the deluded theories of ignorant people distract you from the true issues of the day.  It is imperil that we keep our resolve and apply real pressure to our representatives on real issues.

Earlier this month, Al Gore released a lot of CO2 into the atmosphere by flying to England to talk about how man is “changing” the temperatures worldwide.  While in England, Gore seemed to reveal his true purpose for “fighting” global warming:

But it is the awareness itself that will drive the change and one of the ways it will drive the change is through global governance and global agreements.

For some reasons, Democrats always want to tie the U.S. into global rules, as if this will somehow equate with perfection.  Whenever a U.S. president says they will not sign an agreement Democrats get upset.  Take Kyoto, for example (even though Congress voted it down) under Clinton or Bush’s refusal to sign a U.N. Gay Rights Declaration (because it would commit the federal government on matters that fall under state jurisdiction).

There are several interesting points raised regarding the taxation of “global warming” and reinforce my opinion that the entire thing is simply a scheme to raise government income and re-distribute wealth:

The environmental group Friends of the Earth advocated the transfer of money from rich to poor nations during the 2007 UN climate conference.

A climate change response must have at its heart a redistribution of wealth and resources,” said Emma Brindal, a climate justice campaigner coordinator for Friends of the Earth.

The 2007 UN conference was presented with a report from the Swiss Federal Office for the Environment titled “Global Solidarity in Financing Adaptation.” The report stated there was an “urgent need” for a global tax in order for “damages [from climate change] to be kept from growing to truly catastrophic levels, especially in vulnerable countries of the developing world.”

Of course, all of these “damages” are to be assessed by some inter-governmental worldwide body to determine which ones are man made and which ones are not.  Perhaps this body will meet at the UN, the same organization that put countries like Libya on the human rights commission.
