President Obama is meeting with Israeli Prime Minister Netanyahu to speak about solutions for the Mideast conflict.  Obama, as expected, is set to push his two-state solution for the problem which is currently not too popular within Israel.  This is understandable since any Nation which is forced to endure constant threats of terrorism would be logically opposed to "rewarding" their enemies.  While you cannot say that the Israeli People are wrong for their resistance to this idea, I do believe it would be in the entire world's best interest for this to happen.

First, a Palestinian State would appease SOME, certainly not all, Palestinians.  They don't want to be governed by a foreign People anymore than we do.  A Palestinian State would allow them to truly govern themselves without interference from Israel.  They would invest in their Country and (ideally) prosper.  This would not only benefit the Palestinians but Israel as well.  Right now, the Palestinian People do not have much, if anything.  A People with nothing to lose will go to extreme means just to gain something.  If these same People create a true Country with an economy, infrastructure, social programs, etc., they will be less willing to lose it all.  Hamas shoots rockets into Israel and Israel responds with raids.  Does anything really get accomplished?  If the State of Palestine exists, there will be more opposition within to sanction the terror and risk losing the administrations power.  Israel would be able to attack real targets as opposed to renegade terrorists hiding in schools and Mosques.  It levels the playing field and sends a stronger message to the Palestinian People as a whole.

A Palestinian State would also lessen the martyr card so loved by the Leaders in other Muslim Nations.  All the Arab Countries surrounding Israel are governed by Leaders who use the Palestinians as a scapegoat for their troubles.  These Leaders are corrupt and tyrannical and by distracting the masses, they maintain their power.  This is why the Arab Nations offer so little help, if any at all, to the Palestinians.  They cry out over their unity with the Palestinians but they do nothing.  If a state of Palestine were to exist, people might stop blaming Israel for their own problems and start questioning their own Leaders.

These are some reasons why I support the two State solution, but my main reason is this.  This endless cycle of violence will not stop unless something radical happens.  Israel will not give up and will not lay down and let the world handle this problem.  The world has shown too many times just exactly how they prefer to "deal" with Jews.  Israel has made many concessions and they will be forced to make more in the future.  A Palestinian State is something that will have to happen sooner or later.  The Palestinians, however, will have to make concessions as well.  They can have their own Nation, but they have to recognize that Israel is here to stay.  I have every confidence that at some point, they will realize this and the result will be progress.  The question is whether it happens now or later.
