Okay, I'm the first to admit it.  After writing a post about how Cheney should shut his mouth and creep back into the shadows, I am now intrigued by this increasingly vocal man.  I believe his opinions on Guantanamo Bay and the use of torture are valid (I don't necessarily agree with them though) and I can understand his desire to defend his legacy.  My problem is that I don't believe he is the right messenger to be taking center stage and representing the GOP.  Dick Cheney is a symbol of all that America is tired of and voted against in the last election.  It is apparent now that during the last eight years, like a good Vice-President, he was stifled by Pres. Bush and was forced to keep his mouth shut.  Now that he is free to do as he pleases, he is coming out guns blazing.

In his latest revelation to the world, yesterday the former VP took on the issue of gay marriage and truly surprised me.  Accompanied by his daughter, Cheney described how he feels that gay marriage is a state issue, not a federal one.  This strikes at the heart of what the new Republican movement should be about; returning power to the States rather than the Federal Government.  Cheney even let his "inner-libertarian" through when he said to the National Press Club "I think people ought to be free to enter into any kind of union they wish, any kind of arrangement they wish."  This was a big step for him, I'm sure.  In this statement, he has proved to me that he does indeed have an understanding of the Constitution and the comprehension of individual rights.

Gay Marriage is controversial and anyone can understand why.  I do agree with Cheney that if the issue is to be a legal one, the States should have the power over it.  Personally, I don't think this topic should even be determined by voters, just like I don't think voters should be allowed to vote on whether they want interracial marriages or marriages between members of different religions.  If two consenting adults wish to get married, it must be allowed since it offers no harm to anybody's life, liberty, or their pursuit of happiness.  Now, I want to be clear about this.  I believe that under the rights granted to all Americans, Homosexuals should be allowed to marry.  I do NOT think that anyone must be forced to betray their religious beliefs and approve of this.  You don't have to condone it, like it, or even support it.  You do have to accept it.  You might not agree with a black man marrying a white woman, but you DO have to accept it.  You might not like a Catholic man marrying a Jewish woman but you DO have to accept it.  You must accept it because as much as you disagree with it, their union in marriage does not affect you whatsoever.  The only people affected are the ones who enter into the marriage.  Dick Cheney, thanks to his Daughter, understands this and let's face it- if he can understand it, ANYONE can understand it.  Now let the argument begin...

Whoa there pardner...you're telling me I HAVE to accept that a gay man or gay woman should be allowed to marry those of the same gender? I am afraid not. While I agree that it is a state, not federal issue, I don't have to accept that homosexuals have the same right to the same marriage that is afforded to heterosexuals. There should be be measures that allow a same sex couple the legal rights in insurance coverage, matters of estate, and the rights of medical visitation/decision making, but extending marriage to include gays isn't it. Marriage is well defined between man and woman and to confuse it with the union of man and man or woman and woman just opens the door for man and women (not a typo, polygamy), man and beast, or other combination that has man paired up with some other relationship that challenges the moral fiber of the sanctity of marriage.

When we start accepting everybody's concept of a perfect utopia, where does that leave us? The church has already become so watered down with the acceptance of certain values, that we don't even resemble a moral authority anymore. If Moses had accepted that the people were going to worship the Golden Calf and allowed that to go on, the Israellites would never have reached the Promised Land. We as Christians have to draw the line on moral tolerance somewhere and the bonds of HOLY matrimony are already well defined. Also, the people in California, probably THE most homosexually populated state in the union have spoken clearly that they do NOT want gay marriage, and if the people say they don't support gay marriage, why should we be forced to accept it from a government that is supposed to be of the people,by the people, and for the people?

You actually DO have to accept it. The idea of "separate but equal" or two different sets of rules for people is a troubling and false idea. I agree with the post because he is saying that you don't have to APPROVE of it (which I don't) but you do have to ACCEPT it. Based on your logic, if you and the majority of Americans disagreed on inter racial marriage or people of different religions marrying, it should be illegal as well. There was a time when the church would not recognize a white person marrying a black person or a christian marrying a jew, but they no longer forbid these things. You speak of moral tolerance, perhaps that should encompass the idea that all people are created equal and should have equal standing and rights, especially under the law.

A government of the people, by the people, and for the people means all the people - not just some or the slight majority. Tyranny of the majority anyone?

Question - I've heard the argument about opening the door for polygamy and bestiality before, but what I don't understand is where the logic for it lies. Marriage is a governmental institution - also a religious one, but since being undertaken by the government as a contractual agreement wherein certain rights are extended, it is primarily a governmental institution and therefore must be treated as such. In that light, it is two *consenting* adults that come under this contract. Why would it ever be extended to include animals? We do not currently allow humans and animals to be contractually bound together...

The polygamous thing I could see a tad...it's a religious value that some people hold and therefore could possibly argued as a religious discrimination thing. I don't think it would matter much to me there either - as long as there are adults consenting (I think the bad rep comes from children being forced to wed along with incestual realtions), and it's understood that if one of the wives leave, that's alimony plus child support...they all leave and you are one screwed pooch. We don't have laws restricting men from having multiple children with multiple women and so forth.

Further, I think you can also look at where you sit on the "why" argument - do people choose to be gay or are they born that way? If you think it's a choice, then your arguments stand valid in a certain legal stance I suppose...but if one is born that way, then the restriction on their rights to equal opportunities (a marriage contract) is VERY apparent.

Gay Marriage is against the church and everything we hold dear. It is unacceptable in America or anywhere else. A man and a woman marrying is natural. A man and a man marrying is contrary to nature, biology, decency, and a sin. We don't allow gay marriage for the same reason we dont allow murder, just because some people want to do it, it doesnt make it alright to actually do.

Chris,
I think you should live with a gay couple for 30 days. I think in the end you will realize it is no different than how you and your wife/girlfriend live so why not allow gay marriage.
